A piece of data becomes the hero of an Olympic story. Working with Deloitte Digital, I directed a film shown between sections of a touchscreen game within their Olympic booth experience. I led look development and created key sequences to help rich 3D, live action, and a flatter 2D experience feel like one world.

The Context

Take people inside the data

Flight of the Byte follows information from its creation on the mountain through the work of formatting, enriching, and delivering it for broadcast. At Deloitte’s Milano Cortina 2026 booth, visitors explored that journey through a touchscreen game. Our film connected the playable moments and gave the underlying technology a story people could follow.

I directed the Goodthings film team and led look development, working closely with Deloitte Digital’s creative team and the game development team. The reference we kept coming back to was the Magic School Bus: let people see the process unfold from the inside.

The Creative Challenge

One world, two visual approaches

The film moved through rich 3D environments and live-action footage. The touchscreen game was flatter and more graphic. Both needed their own strengths, but moving between them had to feel like staying inside the same story.

We used the game’s assets as a starting point for the film, developing their forms through materials, lighting, and camera movement. I also built the animation system connecting the film and game, helping the team carry shared shapes and behaviors between the two.

The Centerpiece

The megabyte

Transfer & enrichment. Data streams gather and fuse into one form. I animated this sequence from particle simulation through final grade. It’s still one of my favorite pieces of motion I’ve made.
From the Film

Excerpts

Formatting. Raw data finds structure, with the movement showing the process of sorting and organizing.
The API. Structured data flows out to where it’s needed.
Look Development

Finding the feel of the world

Gradient study. The atmospheric green haze that didn't make the final cut. A personal favorite anyway.
The Byte. Starting with the game’s shapes and finding their cinematic counterpart.
3D Byte exploration
Byte exploration. Material, light, and life in a single asset.
Light approach. An early lighting exploration.
Radial style frame
Radial style frame. Testing how light and repeating forms could give data a sense of scale.
Data particle base. An early style exploration that didn’t make the final film. A concept I still like.
The game side, tutorial 1. Tutorial animation by our team, using the development team’s game assets.
The game side, tutorial 2. Format, enrich, deliver. The same data journey, expressed through the game’s flatter visual approach.
The Experience

A continuous story

The finished film played between sections of the game, with tutorial animations bringing the same data journey back into the touchscreen experience. The live action, 3D sequences, and 2D interactions were connected by a shared visual approach.
